Atonement

Hey there,

This month I’m showcasing my favourite things (it being my birthday month and all that) and today I’m sharing a quote from one of my all-time favourite books.

Not many books make me emotional, and it is super rare for a book to make me cry, but this one? I weep like a baby every single time.

The first time I read Atonement by Ian McEwan, I was on the plane home from Spain, and I loved it — but I didn’t cry.

Then on my birthday over twelve plus years ago, I watched the film by myself in my bedroom and bawled my eyes out. I was adamant the book didn’t end the same way as the film… so I got my copy from my bookcase and noticed I’d missed two pages while on the plane! I then read those pages… and found myself crying double the amount because it was like being hit by an emotional truck twice!

This quote taken from near the beginning of the book makes my heart happy. Plus, hearing it in James McAvoy’s voice is also totally fine with me!

Dearest Cecilia, You’d be forgiven for thinking me mad, the way I acted this afternoon. The truth is I feel rather light headed and foolish in your presence, Cee, and I don’t think I can blame the heat.
— Robbie, Atonement by Ian McEwan

Have you read/seen Atonement? Does it make you cry? Tell me all about it.

Until next time,

Katie Lowrie
