Need deep within me

Even from where I was sitting, I could smell the scent of cherry on her lips, and I knew it wasn’t from her Chapstick. Those damn cherry drops she devoured all day, every day, lingered all around her.

For the next hour, I feigned interest as she talked about whatever it was on the page she’d opened the textbook to.

‘I think that’s enough for today. Wouldn’t want your little pea-sized brain to explode with the overload.’

‘It’s the only thing pea-sized about me,’ I joked. I wanted to see her smile again. It was like a need deep within me to make her laugh, to have her turn her smile in my direction because of something I did or said.

It was pathetic.

But it was true.
